‘Preludes & Vollenteries’ takes its name from a collection of works for solo violin published in London in 1700. The concert series explores the music and instruments of the decades when Wren, Hooke & Hawksmoor’s churches rose the devastation of the Great Fire. This concert will include a first chance to hear the earliest dated British viola, made just over London Bridge in 1641, paired with an anonymous sonata from 1690, based on the hymn ‘How Brightly Shines the Morning Star’

As in every concert, tonight’s event includes one of the hundreds of works dedicated to Peter by composers worldwide. This one, a haunting prelude, inspired by another great city, and the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, by the celebrated German composer Jörg Widmann

‘Preludes & Vollenteries’ explores music & instruments heard in the years after the reconstruction of City churches devastated in the ‘Great Fire’. This concert includes solo works (‘Assagi’) by the first great Swedish baroque composer Johann Helmich Roman, Telemann ‘Fantasies’, plus Poul Ruders ‘Summer’s Prelude & Winter’s Fugue’, inspired by Peter’s passionate advocacy of contrapuntal writing for the violin. First chance to hear a Thomas Smith violin (overleaf) – one of the most beautiful made in London at the time of the reconstruction of St Botolph’s

‘Preludes & Vollenteries’ explores solo music & string instruments of the late 1600s, in the astonishing churches built & reconstructed after the ‘Great Fire’. St Anne & St Agnes is Sir Christopher Wren’s most overtly ‘Dutch Church’. Its crystalline acoustics are perfect for a programme framing a dialogue between two powerfully individual voices – Ambrogio Lonati, exiled Queen Christina of Sweden’s violinist in Rome, & Nashville-based Michael Alec Rose. Rose has written Peter a wonderful series of solo works, since they began collaborating 15 years ago. Played on extraordinary 17th century instruments from Italy & London
