330pm. NNE from Herne Bay. Ship starting engines, hull down. Contrails for Peter Lanyon. A word about painting/drawing and walking. Whilst I carry a sketch book when I walk, the majority of notes that I take are in incomprehensible shorthand. The images that strike me have nothing to do with the photographs that I take. As I walked down the cliff to the front at Herne Bay, the light was darkening from by left (the South), whilst the sky to the north was still light. For about 15 minutes, the horizon the the north was smudged with a filthy stack of smoke, which seem to be from a vessel hull down (more than 7/8 miles away, seen from sea level). The image crystallized this evening, and the ever-present jet trails over the Thames estuary nudged me towards Peter Lanyon’s work. A hero of mine. 27 10 18
